SUMMARY:Craig Mitchell\, Export Director\, Chateau Ste. Michelle\, Washington State\, USA
DESCRIPTION:Washington is the second largest wine producing state in the USA. So it’s perhaps surprising that our Society has not had a tasting of Washington State wines in the past. We’ll put that right this month as we welcome Craig Mitchell\, who is Regional Export Director for Chateau Ste. Michelle winery. The winery is the oldest in Washington State\, initially named Ste. Michelle Vintners\, but changed its name to Chateau Ste. Michelle in 1976 following the building of a French style chateau in Woodinville\, just outside Seattle. The winery aims to build on old world winemaking traditions with new world innovation. There are two state-of-the-art wineries\, one for red and one for white. \nThe tasting will predominantly feature wines from the Chateau Ste Michelle portfolio\, plus a couple of joint ventures with other renowned producers. \nHow to book your places \nBooking for members opens on Friday 30th December.   Guest bookings open on Thursday 5th January.   Please do not try to book or pay any money before these dates. \nFirstly\, please check with Clive that places are still available. SUMMARY:TASTING CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been alerted by The Raven that our regular second Wednesday slot coincides with the semi-final of the upcoming football World Cup.  The Raven expect the whole premises to be flooded with footie fans\, so it’s just not going to be practical for us to try to hold a tasting at the same time.  So there will be no tasting in December.   The Members’ Choices evening originally planned for December will now take place in February. \n

SUMMARY:Robbie Rugman\, Cambridge Wine Merchants: Australia vs the Old World
DESCRIPTION:This month we will be tasting wines from Cambridge Wine Merchants\, a merchant we’ve not previously featured at the Society.  Cambridge Wine Merchants was established in 1993 by two friends\, Hal Wilson and Brett Turner.  They started with one shop in Cambridge and have grown to become one of the biggest independent wine merchants in the UK.  They keep a look out for funky one-offs and proper wine made by real people. They source many of their products from independent\, family-run wineries.  You won’t know all the names\, but they are confident you will enjoy the wines! \nOur presenter is Robbie Rugman\, who some may recall presented Gallo wines to us a few years back.   Robbie has been with Cambridge Wine Merchants since the end of 2021.   We’re very much looking forward to welcoming Robbie back to The Raven. \nThis time Robbie will compare wines from Australia and the Old World.  He’ll focus on four varietals: \n\nRiesling\nChardonnay\nShiraz vs Syrah\nPinot Noir\n\nHow to book your places \nBooking for members opens on Wednesday 26th October.   Guest bookings open on Thursday 3rd November.  Please do not try to book or pay any money before these dates. \nFirstly\, please check with Clive that places are still available. SUMMARY:Preet Sahota\, Edgmond Wines: Boutique wines of South Africa
DESCRIPTION:Edgmond Wines has been operating for over 7 years now and in that time they have been privileged to work with a number of boutique winemakers who they now consider close friends. Their owner Preet Sahota is young and very enthusiastic and usually visits South Africa every year to discover what’s new.  He has enormous passion for the wines of South Africa and he believes their winemakers produce some of the most exciting wines on the planet. \nTonight\, Preet will present a selection of fine wines from boutique winemakers.  These are typically wines which are produced on a small scale\, limited-production\, hand-crafted and artisanal.   I think most of these wines will be new to our members and it will be exciting to see what the upcoming winemakers of South Africa are producing. \nHow to book your places \nBooking for members opens on Monday 3rd October.   Guest bookings open on Thursday 6th October.   Please do not try to book or pay any money before these dates. \nFirstly\, please check with Clive that places are still available. SUMMARY:Nik Darlington\, Pip of Manor Farm: Nik's pick of Pip's best selling wines
DESCRIPTION:You may not have heard of Pip.  But some of you will remember Nik Darlington\, who presented to us a few years ago when he was at Red Squirrel Wine. Nik has now created Pip\, an independent wine merchant based just down the down from us in Seale near Farnham.  It’s a local wine shop\, run by locals\, for locals – with around 200 wines on the shelves.  Pip’s philosophy is all about working with brilliant people who like us believe the best wine starts with good\, honest farming.  And they make their wines come alive when you hear the stories behind the bottles that are crying out to be told. \nNik lives a short walk away from the shop.  He’s been in the wine business since 2012 when he created a small wine importer that grew quickly to become a slightly bigger small importer and was named the third best supplier to the UK restaurant trade in 2019. \nTonight Nik will present his pick of Pip’s best selling wines\, so there will be something for everyone. \nOh\, and who is Pip?  Well\, you’ll need to come along to find out! \nHow to book your places \nBooking for members opens on Wednesday 27th April.  Guest bookings open on Thursday 5th May.   Please do not try to book or pay any money before these dates. \nFirstly\, please check with Clive that places are still available. You can book through Clive by e-mail to \nwvws.bookings.clive@gmail.com \nAs soon as Clive has confirmed you have places reserved\, please confirm your booking by making payment of £20 members / £24 guests to the Society account in the usual way. \nAccount Name:  Whitewater WineSoc \nSort Code: 30-91-31 \nAccount Number: 01158564 \nPlease enter a contact phone number to the reference field\, just in case we’re not sure who the payment has come from!

SUMMARY:Visit to Greyfriars Winery and Vineyard - WAITLIST
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this event is now full.   We are holding a waitlist in case places become available. \nFor our first real-life get together in a long time\, we have organised an exclusive\, private visit to the award winning Greyfriars winery and vineyard\, set just off the Hog’s Back between Farnham and Guildford. This will be an evening tour on Wednesday 14th July\, starting at 6.30pm\, which will allow us to benefit from the long summer evenings. \nNow under the ownership of Mike and Hilary Wagstaff\, the original vineyard was planted in 1989 and since taking over in 2010\, they have expanded the area under vine to almost 50 acres on three sites focusing on producing stunning English Sparkling Wine. They have also built a brand new winery with state of the art winemaking equipment. \nOur tour will be led by Aaron Gilling\, an enthusiastic and key member of the team at Greyfriars. This will take place largely outdoors amongst their beautiful vines and in the disgorging room where the wines are finished before bottling. \nThose attending will receive a souvenir glass.  And you’ll get 10 per cent off wine purchases after the tour. \nLiz and I went on this tour led by Aaron a couple of summers ago and we think it is the best English vineyard tour we’ve done. \nHow to book your places \nFirstly\, please check availability of places by e-mailing the Chair Keith Cooper. \nWhen you have received confirmation from the Chair that places are being held for you\, please secure your places by making a payment of £25 per person to the Society’s account.  \nAccount Name:  Whitewater WineSoc \nSort Code:  30-91-31 \nAccount Number:  01158564 \nPlease enter a contact phone number to the reference field\, just in case we’re not sure who the payment has come from! \nIt will be great to have a Society event after so long – we look forward to seeing you at Greyfriars! \nDirections to Greyfriars \nThe address is The Hog’s Back\, Puttenham\, Surrey\, GU3 1AG.   Please be careful if relying on your satnav\, as access requires a U-turn on the A31.   So probably best to follow these instructions. \nTake the A31 from Farnham towards Guildford\, (the road most know as the “Hog’s Back”). \nDrive on past the turning signposted “Godalming B3000 and Portsmouth”. \nSoon after entering 50 mph speed limit\, you need to get into the RIGHT HAND lane and use the slip road on the RIGHT HAND side of the carriageway\, signposted “Farnham A31”. At the end of the slip road you turn sharp right to return on the A31 towards Farnham. \nAfter 1 mile\, you’ll find the entrance to Greyfriars on your left. You will see a verge side sign saying “Vineyard and Veterinary Centre”and the turn off for the vineyard is shortly after this. Look for the large white sign at the entrance. (Please DO NOT turn off into the entrance signed “Greyfriars House” which you will pass on the way – this is a private house and is not associated with the vineyard.)
