SUMMARY:Nik Darlington\, Pip of Manor Farm: Nik's pick of Pip's best selling wines
DESCRIPTION:You may not have heard of Pip.  But some of you will remember Nik Darlington\, who presented to us a few years ago when he was at Red Squirrel Wine. Nik has now created Pip\, an independent wine merchant based just down the down from us in Seale near Farnham.  It’s a local wine shop\, run by locals\, for locals – with around 200 wines on the shelves.  Pip’s philosophy is all about working with brilliant people who like us believe the best wine starts with good\, honest farming.  And they make their wines come alive when you hear the stories behind the bottles that are crying out to be told. \nNik lives a short walk away from the shop.  He’s been in the wine business since 2012 when he created a small wine importer that grew quickly to become a slightly bigger small importer and was named the third best supplier to the UK restaurant trade in 2019. \nTonight Nik will present his pick of Pip’s best selling wines\, so there will be something for everyone. \nOh\, and who is Pip?  Well\, you’ll need to come along to find out! \nHow to book your places \nBooking for members opens on Wednesday 27th April.  Guest bookings open on Thursday 5th May.   Please do not try to book or pay any money before these dates. \nFirstly\, please check with Clive that places are still available. This will be an evening tour on Wednesday 14th July\, starting at 6.30pm\, which will allow us to benefit from the long summer evenings. \nNow under the ownership of Mike and Hilary Wagstaff\, the original vineyard was planted in 1989 and since taking over in 2010\, they have expanded the area under vine to almost 50 acres on three sites focusing on producing stunning English Sparkling Wine. They have also built a brand new winery with state of the art winemaking equipment. \nOur tour will be led by Aaron Gilling\, an enthusiastic and key member of the team at Greyfriars. This will take place largely outdoors amongst their beautiful vines and in the disgorging room where the wines are finished before bottling. \nThose attending will receive a souvenir glass.  And you’ll get 10 per cent off wine purchases after the tour. \nLiz and I went on this tour led by Aaron a couple of summers ago and we think it is the best English vineyard tour we’ve done. \nHow to book your places \nFirstly\, please check availability of places by e-mailing the Chair Keith Cooper. \nWhen you have received confirmation from the Chair that places are being held for you\, please secure your places by making a payment of £25 per person to the Society’s account.  \nAccount Name:  Whitewater WineSoc \nSort Code:  30-91-31 \nAccount Number:  01158564 \nPlease enter a contact phone number to the reference field\, just in case we’re not sure who the payment has come from! \nIt will be great to have a Society event after so long – we look forward to seeing you at Greyfriars! \nDirections to Greyfriars \nThe address is The Hog’s Back\, Puttenham\, Surrey\, GU3 1AG.   Please be careful if relying on your satnav\, as access requires a U-turn on the A31.   So probably best to follow these instructions. \nTake the A31 from Farnham towards Guildford\, (the road most know as the “Hog’s Back”). \nDrive on past the turning signposted “Godalming B3000 and Portsmouth”. \nSoon after entering 50 mph speed limit\, you need to get into the RIGHT HAND lane and use the slip road on the RIGHT HAND side of the carriageway\, signposted “Farnham A31”. At the end of the slip road you turn sharp right to return on the A31 towards Farnham. \nAfter 1 mile\, you’ll find the entrance to Greyfriars on your left. You will see a verge side sign saying “Vineyard and Veterinary Centre”and the turn off for the vineyard is shortly after this. Look for the large white sign at the entrance. (Please DO NOT turn off into the entrance signed “Greyfriars House” which you will pass on the way – this is a private house and is not associated with the vineyard.)

SUMMARY:Food and Wine at The Falcon
DESCRIPTION:Bookings have now closed for this event – please do not make any more payments. \nWe know from past years that many of our members go on holiday in September\, so our numbers are expected to be lower than other months of the year. This means that it’s not a good month to ask a speaker to travel to present to us. It’s also not viable to use The Raven as the lower number won’t cover our fixed venue costs and we will lose money. \nSo we are going to do something a little different!  We’ll be meeting at The Falcon pub in Rotherwick\, just a couple of miles up the road from Hook. We will enjoy a three course meal (fixed menu\, with a veggie option) and we will be serving a selection of excellent wines to accompany your meal. This will be a casual and relaxed evening – no need to dress up\, just come as you are. The emphasis is on a fun evening of food\, wine and friends. If you usually come on your own\, please consider bringing a friend or partner. \nThe wines will all come from Keith’s cellar. Many of the wines have been languishing in temperature controlled conditions for years\, maturing nicely and waiting for just an occasion like this! So expect a bubbly on arrival\, some decent whites and some excellent mature reds. The wines will be poured tasting style\, like we do at The Raven. Keith will be giving the briefest of introductions to the wines\, the main thing is for you to be able to chat whilst enjoying the food and wines. Over the evening\, you can expect to drink about the same amount of wine as we pour on a usual tasting night. \nIt’s the first time in many years that we’ve offered a casual\, relaxed evening of food and wine. We very much hope you will join us – I can promise some excellent wines for you to enjoy! \nBooking is now open to members and guests. Members & Guests £37.50 to include a 3 course meal and wines. \nPre-booking and payment is essential. We ask you to book and pay as soon as possible\, so we can get a feel for numbers attending and keep The Falcon informed. Bookings must close by Saturday 31st August. We encourage you to make your payment by electronic transfer. \nThe easiest way to book is to click here and pay electronically \nIt would be helpful if you could also e-mail me to tell me that you are coming along. \nHere is the menu for our evening: \nStarter: Smoked haddock croquettes\, lemon & honey mayonnaise \nMain: Parma ham wrapped Chicken stuffed with halloumi\, sweet potato fries & Mediterranean vegetables \nDessert: Toffee apple pie & ice cream \nWe will assume that you wish to have the menu above unless you tell us you want the veggie starter and/or veggie main options below. \nVeggie starter option: Avocado\, babay tomatoes\, blueberries\, broad beans and dressing \nVeggie menu option: Barkham blue cheese and caramelised onion tart

SUMMARY:Richard Girling\, Fells: Chardonnay & Pinot Noir
DESCRIPTION:For our May tasting\, we are pleased to welcome back Richard Girling\, Fine Wine Director for Fells. The company can trace its roots back to the mid 19th century\, so is one of the longest established wine importers in the UK. Richard is a popular speaker at our Society and this time he is going to focus on two classic grape varieties – chardonnay and pinot noir. So we’ll be able to experience classic style wines from Burgundy and the old world alongside examples of how these grapes are used to make stunning wines in the new world. SUMMARY:Nik Darlington\, Red Squirrel Wines: Portugal (Azores) & North West Spain
DESCRIPTION:For our April tasting\, we welcome Nik Darlington of Red Squirrel Wines on his first visit to our Society. Nik will be showing us wines from the Azores islands in the Atlantic Ocean and North West Spain. The wines from the Azores are absolutely superb and it will be our Society’s first opportunity to taste wines from these islands. The wines from North West Spain reflect the indigenous grapes grown in this part of the country and I know this is already a favourite region for many of our members. \nWe have enjoyed wines from the Red Squirrel portfolio once before\, back in 2014\, when Robert Woodhead presented to us.  Jancis Robinson MW describes Red Squirrel as “one of the newer\, younger independent merchants that has flowered in Britain”.   And Steven Spurrier declared their range of wine “inspiring”. So we’re looking forward to tasting some more of their wines this month. \nThe photo shows Nik Darlington (centre) and the Red Squirrel team judging the best burger in town!  \nClick here to see the video \nWelcome drink from 7.45pm.  Tasting starts at 8pm. \nMembers: £15.  Guests: £18. \nSpecial Offer for first time visitors!  For a limited period of time\, guests who are attending a tasting at The Raven for the first time pay just £5 instead of the usual £18 guest fee.
